Small craft advisory in effect for Barbados

Small craft operators and beachgoers are being urged to exercise caution as strong winds and large open-water swells, driven by an Atlantic high-pressure system, create hazardous marine conditions around Barbados.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has warned that navigating small vessels may become hazardous under the current conditions, potentially resulting in injury or loss of life.

As such, a small craft advisory was issued on Monday at 2 p.m., as gusty winds began affecting the island. Sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots are generating rough seas, with swells expected to reach between 2 and 3 metres (6.5 to 10 feet) starting tonight. These choppy conditions are forecast to persist for the next few days.

The BMS said swells are expected to gradually subside toward the end of the week. In the meantime, beachgoers were advised to use only beaches where lifeguards are on duty and to follow the guidance of the relevant authorities.

The advisory will be updated on Wednesday at noon or sooner if conditions warrant. (BMS/BT)
