Small Craft and High Surf Advisory issued for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Small Craft and High Surf Advisory for the island.

Choppy sea conditions and above-normal swell heights expected to persist through today and into next week.

The advisory comes as a result of a strong western Atlantic high-pressure system generating winds between 20 to 25 knots (35 to 47 km/h) across the region. Moderate to rough seas in open water, with swells ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 meters, are expected to continue.

The maximum swell heights are forecasted to occur on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

According to the BMS, small craft operators and beachgoers should be prepared for hazardous conditions.

The risk of injury or loss of life is heightened due to the potential for large open water swells that may impact vessels. There is also the possibility of frequent wave overtopping onto properties and roads in close proximity to the shoreline, particularly along the southern coasts.

In addition, beach erosion is expected, with some or all beaches submerged, especially during high tide times along the eastern coasts.

The public is urged to monitor updates from the BMS, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the Barbados GIS, and local media networks for the latest information.

The advisory was issued at 12 noon and will be updated by 12 noon on Monday or sooner if conditions change. (BMS)
