Small Craft and High Surf Advisory remains in effect for Barbados as rough sea conditions continue to affect coastal and marine areas, the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) said on Monday.
According to the BMS, strong Atlantic high-pressure systems are generating winds of 20 to 30 knots, keeping seas agitated despite a slight reduction in swell heights. Open-water swells are currently ranging between 2.5 and 3.0 metres, with the possibility of swells reaching up to 3.5 metres from Tuesday night into Wednesday.
As a result, small craft operators are being cautioned that conditions may be hazardous, particularly for smaller vessels, while beach users are also being warned of dangerous surf conditions.
The BMS said some beach erosion is possible, especially along northern, eastern and southern coastlines, with several beaches expected to be submerged at times of high tide. Authorities also warned that the conditions pose a risk of injury or loss of life if precautions are not taken.
While sea conditions are forecast to gradually improve toward the weekend, meteorologists cautioned that the advisory could be upgraded to a warning if swells increase again midweek.
Marine users are encouraged to monitor official updates and follow guidance issued by the Barbados Meteorological Services, the Department of Emergency Management, the National Conservation Commission and other relevant authorities.
The advisory is scheduled to be updated on Tuesday, December 16, or earlier if conditions change.
