Approximately 115 Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) workers worked assiduously to clean waste throughout last weekend.
From the Pic O De Crop Finals, Foreday morning, Bridgetown Market and Kadooment Day, the sanitation staff, led by superintendent Karen Harding, made sure the streets and venues were cleared after each event.
Public Relations Officer with the SSA Carl Padmore said 45.9 tonnes of waste were cleared during Bridgetown market weekend in total. He praised the workers who gave their services to the festival allowing for the reopening of the Mighty Grynner Highway by 6 a.m. Tuesday to allow free-flowing traffic.
“The staff, they would have given back to the festival, they took pride in doing it and the minister Adrian Forde and the SSA chairman, manager and operations manager would wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to the SSA for the work they did over the weekend despite the pressure that department is under,” he said.
Padmore also issued a future reminder to stall owners that the disposal of cooking oil was the vendors’ responsibility.
“When they are dismantling their tents and the areas, it is their responsibility to move the products. SSA is just removing the refuse generated by the patrons,” he noted.
