Two students of the St Mary’s Junior School—one looking forward to playing netball and hockey at her new school, and the other anticipating his summer holidays and going to camp—are the recipients of the Goddard Enterprises Limited (GEL) Scholarships for 2025.
Savier Burnett, who loves playing video games, especially those with cars, is described as “focused, disciplined and settled”, having “found new purpose and direction after facing some personal challenges”.
Through his determination and resilience, he has earned a place at the Coleridge and Parry School but is looking forward to his summer holidays when he will attend a Pathfinders camp, where he will go hiking and engage in some of his favourite arts and crafts activities. His teachers regard Savier’s story as one of “redemption, growth and quiet strength”.
Jaycee Blackman, the only one in her family to attend Combermere, has great hopes of playing netball and hockey at her new school come September, and is excited about tackling the 15 subjects on her new timetable, including her favourite, mathematics. Now a past prefect for the Infants Department at St Mary’s, she is described as “courteous, humble and respectful to her peers and teachers, with a sense of empathy and kindness, which is reflected in how she supports her classmates, often helping others who may be struggling academically or emotionally.” Her teachers consider her a natural role model and someone who leads by example.
GEL’s Group VP of HR and Shared Services, Lee-Ann Millar-Mendes, on presenting the prizes, extended congratulations to the two and their guardians.
“It gives us great pleasure to present these awards to you. We are pleased to hear of your progress, and that you have worked hard to reach this point. On behalf of all of us at Goddard Enterprises, I wish you all the best, as you embark on your journey in your new schools.”
Over the past 12 years, 24 students have benefited from the GEL St Mary’s scholarships which award the winners $1 500 each to assist with the purchase of their new school uniforms and supplies, and to assist in their transition from primary to secondary school.
The scholarships are awarded to Class Four students who show leadership skills, have worked hard and been able to overcome any challenges that may have come their way during their time at the school. (PR)
