Nineteen children aged 6 to 16 are currently benefiting from the Learning in Harmony Homework Program, an initiative designed to provide after-school instruction in grammar and mathematics to students from New Orleans and surrounding communities in Bridgetown.
The Barbados Police Service (TBPS), in collaboration with insurance company Sagicor Life, officially launched the latest edition of the initiative on Saturday. Conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, the sessions are led by two tutors and are sponsored by Sagicor Life.
Students were engaged following the launch of the programme.
The initiative was conceptualised in 2012 by Sargeant Weekes and Station Sargeant Mohan of TBPS, along with former resident Wendy Gill, who wanted to give back to the community in which she grew up.
In the initial stages, the programme was sponsored by the Pan American Life Insurance through the support of its then General Manager, Keith King. Upon his retirement, that support continued through his successor, Paul Inniss. Inniss subsequently moved on to Sagicor Life and maintained his support.
