Barbados earned three medals at the recent United World Wrestling (UWW) Americas Developmental Camp and Pat Shaw Memorial Tournament in Guatemala City, with teen wrestler Rebecca Williams leading the charge.
The 17-year-old competed in two divisions, capturing silver in the Under-17 65kg category after wins over Kimberly Marroquin (Guatemala) and Silvia Trigueros (El Salvador), and a loss to Mabel Ajpop (Guatemala). She also claimed bronze in the tougher Under-20 62kg class, facing older opponents Meissy Valdez (Guatemala) and Karla Alvarez (El Salvador).
Senior wrestler Kwami Inniss also grabbed silver in the men’s freestyle 79kg division. He defeated Elias Abarca (Costa Rica) and Carlos Saenz (Guatemala), falling only to Angel Martinez of Guatemala.
In the 97kg Greco-Roman class, Shaquille Agard earned bronze in his regional debut. He advanced on a walkover, then lost to Jamaica’s Richard Alexander and Nicaragua’s Francisco Lopez.
The five-member Barbados delegation included coach Curtis Moise and team leader Joanne John. Moise and Agard also completed UWW certification in refereeing and coaching.
Funded by the Barbados Olympic Association Inc., the trip was part of a regional development initiative. USA Wrestling’s Jonathan Taylor is expected to visit Barbados soon to assist with coaching development.
Williams is next scheduled to compete at the Canada Beach Open in Ontario. (SM)
