Three dead, 37 hurt in Russian strikes on northeastern Ukraine

Russian strikes on northeastern Ukraine overnight killed at least three people, injured 37 and left thousands without power after a power plant and energy networks were damaged.

A 16-year-old boy, a 19-year-old woman, and a 51-year-old woman were killed and 25 were injured in a western suburb of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, drones struck at least one high rise building elsewhere in the city injuring 11 and the city’s main Kharkivsʹka Tets 5 power plant was hit.

Blackouts were reported in Izyum, 70 miles southeast of Kharkiv after the power grid was damaged after a Russian missile hit a residential district in the north of the city, injuring one person and damaging 15 houses and an apartment building.

The attacks brought the number of people killed and injured in and around Kharkiv in the past 24 hours to four and 45, respectively, following deadly glide-bomb strikes on the Nemyshlyanskyi district in the east of the city on Sunday that killed one and injured at least eight others.

In Kyiv, emergency power outages in parts of four districts of the capital Sunday due to a Russian attack that also brought public transport to temporary standstill carried over into Monday.

Ukrenergo said hourly power outages for households and capacity restrictions for businesses would be in place from 6 a.m. through 11.59 p.m. in some regions of Ukraine from 6 a.m. through 11.59 p.m., citing “Russian missile and drone strikes on energy infrastructure” as the reason.

Kyiv residents were also warned the water supply could be affected by “prolonged” power outages but that sewers should remain unaffected.

The attacks during Sunday and overnight came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Ukraine and Russia had agreed an energy cease-fire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that while the deal was news to him he welcomed it and vowed that Ukraine would abide by any pause in attacks on energy infrastructure, provided Russia did the same.

Saying he found out about the truce “from the media,” Zelensky noted in a post on X on Sunday night that the skies over Ukraine had been full of Russian “shahed” drones all day and that there had been glide bomb strikes and attacks on energy infrastructure.

The Kremlin did not immediately comment on the agreement announced by Trump. (UPI)
