Barbadian draughts maestro Jack Francis is eyeing redemption on the global stage after what he describes as a “dismal” showing at the US National Festival earlier this month, an underwhelming performance he squarely attributes to last-minute funding delays and preparation setbacks.
Francis, a major player on the international draughts circuit, had entered the US tournament hoping to make history by becoming the first person to hold both the US Open and British Open titles at the same time.
“I was trying to make history,” he told the Weekend Nation. “But my preparation was negatively impacted. The funding didn’t come in on time, and balancing work and training became overwhelming.”
Francis said the psychological toll of the uncertainty surrounding support for his travel and participation significantly affected his most recent performance.
