Barbadians and visitors are being advised to pay attention to a tropical wave which is forecast to bring showers from Sunday through Monday.
The Barbados Meteorological Services says there are no watches or warnings associated with the system which is located near 53/54W south of 17N, approximately 700 km (373 miles) east of Barbados at 7 p.m. today.
Over the past 12 hours, the tropical wave has become better organised, and on its current track, is expected to affect Barbados and the Windward Islands from Sunday August 24 into Monday August 25.
A reconnaissance flight is expected to fly into the system on Sunday at approximately 2 p.m. local time.
Regardless of development, say Met officials, this wave is expected to bring wet conditions to the island, with the potential for flooding in low-lying areas and severe thunderstorm activity. The forecast is moderate to heavy showers accompanied by occasional gusty winds and the possibility of thunderstorms as the wave affects Barbados.
As a result, the alert level for excess rainfall and severe thunderstorms has been elevated to yellow (be aware). Flash flood and severe thunderstorm watches or warnings may be issued in the next few hours, at short notice.
However, over the next few hours, guidance suggests there is a low potential for this system to develop as it progresses westward at around 20 to 25 mph.
