Two years in prison for stealing chicken

Just months after completing a three-month prison term for theft, a man who admitted stealing a pack of chicken has been sentenced to two more years behind bars.

Andrew Sylvester Moore, 50, of no fixed place of abode, appeared before the District ‘A’ Traffic Court and pleaded guilty to stealing a parcel of chicken valued at $26 belonging to Seafood Meats on October 30.

Deeming him a reputed thief with 52 previous convictions, most for similar offences, Magistrate Alison Burke admonished Moore. “You were just in this court, not recently got out of prison and here you are again. You are obviously not learning,” she said.

She ordered him to serve two years at Dodds Prison, adding: “You must do better.”

The court heard that Moore entered the store, picked up a pack of chicken quarters and proceeded to the cashier, but then darted through the door without paying. A few days later, he returned, and when management recognised him, they closed the door and contacted the police.
