UWI expands in China as graduate outcomes surge

A University of the West Indies programme in China is delivering near-total employment for graduates while retaining most talent in the Caribbean, according to UWI officials, as it positions itself as a bridge between the region and Asia’s technology-driven economies.

Speaking from the Suzhou Global Institute, located just 30 minutes from the global hub of Shanghai, Justin Seale, assistant registrar for the UWI-China Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), highlighted how the programme is mirroring the “post-independence” era of economic empowerment for a new generation.

The programme is the first South-to-South academic partnership of its kind in the Chinese market. For Seale, the mission is personal. Having moved to Wuhan in 2008, he expressed his determination to ensure current students have a smoother journey than his own “roller coaster” experience.

“That is what motivates me—to make sure our students don’t have to walk the rough road that I had to walk,” Seale said. “Our excellence is embedded in our operations here in Suzhou, and our students are the greatest source of my reward.”

Data from the programme suggested the partnership has yielded near full employment for its graduates. In a sample of 58 alumni, all were either employed or pursuing graduate studies within one year of graduation. Perhaps most striking was the speed of their professional ascent.

“I think of one student who graduated in 2021 and was able to purchase his own home within five years,” Seale said. “It excites me because it harkens back to the era of post-independence in the Caribbean, where a university degree translated directly into upward social mobility. We haven’t seen growth or outcomes like that in decades.”

The registrar pointed to standout alumni as evidence of the degree’s global relevance, including Joshua Johnson, who moved from UWI Five Islands in Antigua to the Tsinghua University — often called the “Harvard of China” — to pursue a doctorate, and Khadijah Clark, who transitioned from the Mona in Jamaica to Duke University and is now a fixture on the US fintech scene.

Despite the international nature of the training, the programme is retaining talent within the region. Seale reported that only 17 per cent of graduates have relocated abroad, meaning 83 per cent of these highly skilled individuals have been absorbed into the Caribbean workforce.

“A UWI degree has not lost its value,” Seale declared. “Our credentials are as relevant as ever for their transformational power. Most of our alumni were scooped up by the financial services and telecommunications industries, but the most important fact is that we only had 17 per cent brain drain.”

As China shifts its developmental focus towards innovation and technology, Seale suggested that UWI was uniquely positioned to lead. While other foreign universities in China are often subsidised by western powers, UWI offers a distinct cultural and intellectual perspective that resonates with the global south, the UWI official said.

“We in the Caribbean have a unique perspective to offer the people of China,” Seale said. “Enrollment from Asia across our UWI system is tenable as the market has a greater supply of prospective international students than our current capacity.

This new market would enrich the diversity of our student body while providing resources for the university to further develop.”

By positioning the UWI as “the light shining from the West”, as its motto suggests, the institute aims to capitalise on shared cultural ties — such as a common interest in cricket within the Commonwealth — to increase UWI brand awareness across Asia.

“We are uniquely placed and capable of leading the global south,” Seale said, “as the academic and social development gateway to China.”
