Venue changes announced for the Prime Minister’s Cup

Two doubleheaders in the league phase and Round of Sixteen stage of the Prime Minister’s Cup have had their venues changed.

The first set of matches affected were those on September 1st, featuring Greens United versus Ellerton and Brittons Hill against Maxwell. The upcoming fixtures on September 27th—Silver Sands versus Weymouth Wales at 7 p.m. and Checker Hall against Technique at 9 p.m.—will now be held at Briar Hall, Christ Church.

The Round of Sixteen stage, set to begin on Saturday, October 5th, will take place at Weymouth Playing Field. Meanwhile, the Barbados Football Association’s Turf in Wildey, St. Michael, will host the quarter-finals on October 26th and 27th, and the semi-finals on November 17th and 18th.

The tournament’s grand finale is scheduled for November 30th at the refurbished Kensington Oval, where the two remaining teams will vie for the inaugural title and a $100,000 cash prize at 9 p.m. The third-place playoff will occur the previous day at the BFA Turf.

This tournament is seen as a significant boost for local footballers, who will receive match fees of $125 during the group stage, $150 in the Round of 16, $200 for the quarter-finals, $250 for the semi-finals, and $300 for the final.

The 24 participating clubs include all ten teams from the BFA Premier League, the top six from Division One, and the top four from both the Second and Third Divisions, based on the 2023 standings. More than 600 players are expected to take part.

Mikalai Dziazhko earned the honour of being the first-ever goalscorer in the Prime Minister’s Cup, while Tevin Baker Savory secured Deacons’ 2-0 victory over Notre Dame on August 26 with a late goal.

Later that evening at Friendship, Parish Land delivered a dominant performance, thrashing St. Andrew Lions 5-0, thanks to braces from Devine Gale-Forde and Demar Linton, along with a goal from Kevon Dottin.

Last night in Haynesville, St. James, Ellerton edged out Greens United with a late penalty. A Rico Belgrave own goal gave Ellerton the lead in the 42nd minute, but Xavier Webster equalised in the 70th. In the dying moments of the match, Noel Gordin calmly converted a 95th-minute penalty to secure the win.

In the 9 p.m. kickoff, Rommel Bynoe stole the spotlight with a five-goal performance as Brittons Hill cruised to an 11-1 victory over Maxwell.
