Women’s cricket off-spinning all-rounder NaiJanni Cumberbatch took a six-wicket haul against Guyana as both Barbados Women’s and Men’s Under-19 teams celebrated victories on Saturday.
Cumberbatch starred with the ball as Barbados Under-19 Women defeated Guyana by 98 runs at Gilbert Park to record their first win of the 2025 West Indies Rising Stars Women’s 35-Over Championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
Cumberbatch’s six-wicket haul, including three wickets in four balls of the 13th over, helped to rout Guyana for just 21 runs in 14 overs while chasing 120.
Asked to bat first, Barbados, unable to last their allotment, were dismissed for 119 in 25.1 overs.
Eboni Brathwaite top-scored with 48 runs off 39 balls, inclusive of four fours and two sixes. Her innings was especially vital after Barbados slipped to 20 for four in 7.2 overs.
Brathwaite and Elecia Bowman 20 (28) put on 57 runs for the fifth wicket to lift the Barbados innings.
Laurene Williams, Trisha Hardat, Tiea Issacs, and Danellie Manns took two wickets apiece for Guyana. No Guyanese batter reached double figures.
Barbados’ first two matches against Windward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago were abandoned due to rain.
In the other Women’s Under-19 matches on Saturday, Leeward Islands defeated Windward Islands by 81 runs at Diego Martin Sporting Complex, while Jamaica defeated Trinidad and Tobago by 56 runs at the Frank Worrell Memorial Ground at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St Augustine campus.
Barbados, Leeward Islands, Jamaica, and Guyana each have one win. Trinidad and Tobago and Windward Islands are yet to register a victory.
The Bajan Under-19 girls next take on Jamaica on Tuesday, before facing Leeward Islands on Thursday.
The final takes place next Saturday at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex. The third place and fifth place playoffs are also scheduled for next Saturday.
Meanwhile in St Kitts and Nevis, defending champions Barbados Under-19 Men beat Jamaica by four wickets at St Paul’s Sports Complex to extend their winning streak to four games in the 2025 West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 50-Over Championship.
Off-spinner Khomari Griffith returned fantastic figures of four wickets for 14 runs in seven overs, including two maidens, as Jamaica were bowled out for 124 in 29.3 overs.
Barbados then reached 126 for six in 28.1 overs. Left-handed opener Zachary Carter top-scored with 37 off 42 balls, while Shaquan Belle was not out on 28 from 31 deliveries. Jamaicans Deshawn James and Kev’Aundre Virgo took two wickets each.
Assisting Griffith in the Barbados bowling effort were off-spinner Xaundre Baptiste and opening fast bowler R’Jai Gittens who both took two wickets.
The Barbados Under-19 Men have so far defeated Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Leeward Islands and Jamaica.
They face the only other unbeaten team USA-1 on Tuesday at St Mary’s Park, before taking on Windward Islands at St Paul’s Sports Complex on Friday. Their final group stage match is against USA-2 on July 21 at St Mary’s Park.
The final, which is expected to feature Barbados, takes place on July 24 at the Conaree Sports Club. (RW)
