Senator Ryan Walters says he is as committed as ever to the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) despite again declining to take an executive role in the just concluded Annual Conference of the organisation.
Yesterday, during the final day of the party’s 71st Annual Conference at George Street, St Michael, the Opposition senator said he felt he could better serve his party and the country in the Senate rather than seeking a position in the DLP.
“From 2019 to 2022, I held office in the party. First vice-president, third vice-president, then I transitioned after 2022 into being a senator on behalf of the party. So it’s been a long and interesting journey. So since 2019, I have been on the front line for the party, even in its worst times, when we were now coming out of the first 30-0.
“There were not a lot of voices, and the then president of the party asked me to step up and be a spokesperson. From then to now, I have been actively advocating for the people of Barbados through the Democratic Labour Party, in some form or fashion, and that continues today in the Senate,” he said.
Walters said it was now his third year in the Senate, and this was his focus “at this time”, being the voice of the Opposition there, especially knowing the party had no seats in the House of Parliament.
He said his role was also to encourage others to get involved in what was happening at George Street, in particular those who did well, despite not winning, in the last General Election, such as Pedro Greaves.
“I want to congratulate all of the members who were elected. In particular, I would want to single out Ian Griffith, Simon Clarke, Corey Greenidge, all who really did exceptionally well in the last general election. I think that is commendable that they have now stepped up to be part of the machinery of the DLP in terms of the organisation structure and looking to move the party forward,” he said.
