On Wednesday, students of Wesley Hall Junior School should be back in the classroom in fully refurbished surroundings.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education Transformation (MEdT), Kim Belle, gave that assurance today after students had to return home, the first day of the 2026-2027 Michaelmas Term.
Wesley Hall, located at King Street, St Michael, is one of Barbados’ oldest primary schools and needed extensive repairs, Belle told reporters as officials from MEdT addressed several issues and concerns which arose during a media conference at St Mary’s Primary School.
“If you go to the site now, you will see that the entire plant has been upgraded significantly.
There were some rooms that were not in use that they have been brought back into use as classrooms, removing the children from having to do classes in the hall. So the hall will now be as a hall is supposed to be – for entertainment, for where you’re going to have your general assembly,” Belle said.
The principal’s office is located near the front of the plant and staff quarters have been significantly enhanced, she added.
Belle said the sewage line was ruptured during the construction and this delayed paving. The firm contracted said the work would have been done over the weekend, but it was not.
“We’re trying to settle now with the firm to come back today to have it done.”
With the wind kicking up dust, the decision was taken to send the students and teachers home.
Additionally, after walking the school, officials also discovered areas where snagging needed to be done. The contractor, who was present, committed to having that work completed by tomorrow. (SAT)
