West Indies close in on semi-final spot with victory over Sri Lanka

West Indies moved one step closer to the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as they steamrolled Sri Lanka on Sunday morning.

They won by five wickets at the Gloucestershire County Ground in Bristol – to register their third win in a row – the others by seven wickets against New Zealand last weekend and by seven runs over Scotland  last Thursday.

Sri Lanka were bowled for 98 in 19.4 overs as Windies skipper Hayley Matthews took 3-15. She took all her wickets in the first three overs, including a sensational caught and bowl with one hand, and was named Player of the Match.

When they batted, Windies slipped to 70-5 before the experience of veteran Stafanie Taylor calmly got them to 99-5 and the win with 3.5 overs to spare. She finished with 27 not out to ensure that West Indies remain unbeaten in Group B, along with England.

The Windies next face England on Wednesday evening where the winner will book their place in the semis. This will be a major event as West Indies women will play their first international fixture at the home of cricket. (PS)
