West Indies Retired Players Foundation honours Hall and Griffith for outstanding contributions

Two of the most celebrated figures in Barbados and West Indies cricket, Sir Wes Hall and Sir Charlie Griffith, were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the game during a special luncheon and awards ceremony hosted by the West Indies Retired Players Foundation in collaboration with the Barbados Cricket Association.

The pair, who formed one of the most feared fast-bowling combinations in cricket history during the 1960s, received glowing tributes from officials as several former players and supporters gathered to celebrate their enduring legacy. Among the audience were former West Indies players The Most Hon. Desmond Haynes, Courtney Browne, Vasbert Drakes and Philo Wallace. Special presentations were made by Dr Nigel Camacho, former president of the West Indies Retired Players Foundation and Calvin Hope, president of the Barbados Cricket Association.

Dr Camacho showered Hall and Griffith with praise not only for their remarkable achievements on the field but also for their role in inspiring generations of Caribbean people. He said that together, they helped establish the foundation for the fast-bowling tradition that would later define West Indies cricket on the world stage.

Dr Camacho, who is also the president of Queen’s Park Club in Trinidad, described the duo as ambassadors of excellence, professionalism and sportsmanship whose influence extended far beyond their playing careers.

Griffith played 28 Tests and took 94 wickets. After retirement he performed several crucial roles in Barbados cricket as chairman of selectors as well as president of the Empire Club. He was the chief architect behind the Barbados Cricket League’s progress in the local competitions.

Hall played 48 Tests and took 192 wickets. One of his most famous feats was bowling the final over in the tied Test in Australia. After retirement he was the West Indies chief selector, the manager of the West Indies team and president of the West Indies Cricket Board and director of the International Cricket Council. (PS)
