Wins for Ellerton and Wotton in BFA Premiership

Two teams at opposite ends of the table recorded victories when the Barbados Football Association Premier League continued at the its Technical Centre in Wildey.

In the opening game at 7 p.m. Ellerton secured a 3-1 win over St Andrew Lions, further cementing the latter team’s likelihood of relegation after winning the Division One title last season.

Captain Shakille Belle gave Ellerton the lead in the 26th minute, before Rickneco Marshall doubled their advantage in the 33rd.

Jemari Henry handed Lions a glimmer of hope with a 58th minute goal, but Belle completed his double with 10 minutes remaining to seal three crucial points for Ellerton.

While the win saw Ellerton keep pace with Brittons Hill United in the battle for third position, for Lions it was another blow as they remain in one of the two relegation positions with just two rounds of matches remaining.

Ellerton remain fourth on 28 points, just behind Brittons Hill on 29, but the St Michael-based team has a game in hand after a bush fire near the venue on Sunday caused their match against Paradise to be abandoned at half time.

Conversely Lions remain stuck on seven points, just ahead of Wotton on goal difference. Wotton grabbed just their second win of the season after upsetting Christ Church neighbours Gall Hill 2-1 in the nightcap game.

Gall Hill struck first via Shaquon Jones in the 18th minute, before Keon Harding equalised for Wotton from the penalty spot just before half time. Logan Carrington then scored the winner for Wotton in the 79th minute to hand his team a morale boosting victory.

Heading into Sunday’s games, defending champions Weymouth Wales head the table on 34 points, ahead of second placed Paradise on 33, with the title still very much up for grabs, with the added dimension of both teams needing to play rescheduled encounters.

Kickstart Rush will look to close the gap to the top four when they oppose Lions at 6 p.m., while Brittons Hill face a potentially tricky game at 8 p.m. against a Wotton team with nothing to lose. The nightcap game will see Wales tackling UWI Blackbirds, who are coming off a gritty win in their last encounter.

Wales will retain the crown with victories in their three remaining games, but continue to manage an injury crisis, which has caused major reshuffles to their match day squads.
