State witnesses told the No. 3A Supreme Court they saw men beating complainant Lezron Robinson after leaving a fete at Pirate’s Cove, nine years ago.
Shomari Jaquan Brendan Bourne of King’s Court, Lodge Road, Christ Church, is on trial accused of causing serious bodily harm to Robinson with intent to do him serious bodily harm or to maim, disfigure or disable him on December 27, 2016. He is also facing the lesser charge of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on Robinson.
He has denied committing the offences on the two-count indictment.
Witness Dionne Jones testified that after attending the event in The City, she was walking with her sister and saw an altercation along Independence Square. She saw the complainant run away and head towards the Fairchild Street Bus Terminal, with other men in pursuit.
“I saw them beating him and hitting him with bottles, and I was saying ‘stop’ and trying to get some help for him,” she said, stating that she was around nine feet away.
The witness told the jury of five women and four men hearing the case — in which Principal State Counsel Joyann Catwell is the prosecutor — that the incident occurred after 12 a.m. and she could “see everything” as the lighting in the area was good and nothing was blocking her view.
She said that the complainant was on the ground in the area where persons disembarked from the buses, and the other men continued to cuff and kick him.
“At one point, I thought he was dead because he wasn’t moving….When he got up he was stumbling, and he hold onto me, and we fall down,” she recalled.
The witness stated that afterwards the complainant got up and headed in the direction of KFC and ran through the stalls behind the bus terminal. She testified that she went after him, and he kept telling her, “help me”.
During the cross-examination by the accused’s attorney Harry Husbands, Jones said that she did not see the fight between the first two people. She stated that she knew several persons involved in the altercation from seeing them on Facebook.
“I don’t know people by their real name. I knew Incy and Shakim,” she said, adding that she was unsure how many people were involved in the fight.
“Do you see any of the other persons that were there in this court?” Husbands asked.
“Not that I can recall,” she responded.
Delano Callender testified that on December 26, he went to Rockley with Robinson and some other persons before they attended a fete at Pirates Cove, then walked to Independence Square to speak with friends.
“Lorenzo was a little way from me. I heard a noise and looked around and saw some guys beating on Lorenzo. I saw guys cuffing him, beating him, and he ran towards the bus terminal,” he stated.
The witness said he went to the hospital and saw the complainant “covered in blood”, and saw injuries to his hand, before contacting Robinson’s mother.
Callender testified that he did not get involved in the altercation and was unable to recall the faces of any of the persons who beat Robinson that night.
He also could not identify anyone in the court who was present that night.
Justice Anthony Blackman presides in the trial, which continues on Wednesday.
