A lively mix of voices, instruments, and youthful energy turned Worthing Square into a midday stage on Wednesday, as students from across Barbados showcased their musical gifts — both vocal and instrumental — in the Ministry’s Lunchtime Concert Series — the first of several performances celebrating Education Month.
St Bartholomew Primary School opened the concert, shining a spotlight on its talented choir. This was followed by the St Lawrence Primary School vocal ensemble, whose renditions of Doxology and The Blessing brought sweet harmonies to the audience.
The spotlight then moved to solo performances, with Christina Edwards of Harrison College captivating the crowd on piano with Copacabana and Sweet Life. Romario Herbert-White from St Leonard’s Boys’ School set the mood with a smooth rendition of George Michael’s Careless Whisper, while fellow student Jahzareo Bourne delivered a soulful interpretation of Rihanna’s Unfaithful.
Even a sudden rainfall did little to dampen spirits, as Daniella Hansen sang Goodness of God with unwavering passion. Nicholas Murrell of Harrison College added a creative twist to the concert, performing Water by Tyla on trumpet — a performance that drew cheers from the audience. Joshua Osbourne and AJ from Blackman and Gollop Primary brought energy and excitement to the stage with their dynamic solo performances.
The grand finale came courtesy of the St Leonard’s Boys’ School Steel Orchestra, whose energetic medley of upbeat tunes had the crowd moving and tapping along.
According to Randy Eastmond, the event organiser, the Lunchtime Concert Series is a key initiative of the Ministry of Educational Transformation, designed to provide a stage for young musicians to grow, perform and be celebrated.
“It’s wonderful to see instrumentalists getting more involved and showing real progress as solo performers,” he said. “This platform is open to all young people in Barbados, helping to nurture the next generation of musical talent.”
The concert series promises more performances and opportunities for young artistes throughout Education Month.
