18-year wait for trial ‘too long’

Ridiculous and unacceptable!

That was how attorney Lalu Hanuman described his client Haniyfa Reza White’s 18-year wait for her murder trial to get off the ground.

He has recommended that courts set timetables for cases and, when those deadlines were not met, dismiss the matters.

White, of Sion Hill, St James, was charged with murdering Julene Bryan on May 16, 2007. The preliminary inquiry, alone, took five years before the matter was committed to the Assizes.

Her High Court trial was set to begin on Monday but Hanuman filed a constitutional motion against the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General, arguing that any potential defence witnesses were either dead, had migrated or their whereabouts were unknown.
