The battle for supremacy at the 2026 BCIC Rally Barbados went down to the final day, but when the dust settled, Stuart Maloney and co-driver Kristian Yearwood stood tallest, claiming their second overall victory in three years in one of the most thrilling editions of the island’s premier motorsport events yesterday.
With relentless pressure coming from rivals, dramatic crashes, mechanical heartbreak and thousands of spectators lining the stages, the 36th edition of Rally Barbados delivered a spectacular finale, cementing its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s premier sporting events.
Maloney entered the final day holding a slender advantage of just over 15 seconds over fellow challenger Kyle Gregg of Jamaica, who was partnered by Kriegg Yearwood. Determined to overturn the deficit, Gregg launched an all-out assault on the remaining stages, attacking from the opening kilometres exactly as he had promised the previous evening.
The pressure was relentless, but Maloney remained composed and produced a measured drive to protect his lead and ultimately secure another memorable victory. Adam Mallalieu was also pushing hard in pursuit of the leaders, but his challenge suffered a major setback when he overshot a right-hander entering Bushy Park and lost valuable time.
Kevin Procter endured a similar moment at the same corner, but his recovery was far smoother. The experienced driver expertly flicked his car back into line, drawing loud cheers from the crowd packed around the iconic circuit.
The day also featured its share of drama and misfortune. Irishman Sheamus Kelly failed to reach the Bushy Park section of the Three Houses stage after his Ford Escort Mk II struck a dip in the road. The rear of the car stepped out violently, sending the machine into three rolls before it came to rest.
Emergency personnel responded immediately, and both Kelly and his co-driver escaped unharmed.
Accident
Fellow Irish competitor Aaron Doyle also suffered a frightening accident at Colleton after striking a cut rock head-on.
The impact left his Ford Fiesta Rally4 heavily damaged, although Doyle and co-driver Anthony McDonald fortunately walked away uninjured.
Mechanical issues also ended several promising runs.
Logan Watson, who had already overcome brake problems on Saturday, saw his rally come to an end when an engine issue sidelined his Ford Escort Mk II.
Jamaican rallycross star Fraser McConnell, making his Rally Barbados debut alongside Justin Morlin, also endured disappointment. After losing his Mitsubishi Evolution during the First Citizens King of the Hill event, McConnell switched to a Skoda Fabia courtesy of Rob Swann and quickly adapted to the unfamiliar machine. However, a gearbox failure on Stage 12 ended his rally prematurely, leaving the young Jamaican frustrated but determined to return.
Rivalry
In the two-wheeldrive category, Roger Mayers maintained control throughout the weekend despite sustained pressure from Irishman Declan Gallagher and Barbadian codriver Stephen Bell.
Gallagher’s fearless commitment impressed local fans as he secured second place in class behind Mayers.
The World Rally Car battle provided another captivating subplot.
Rob Swann and Joe Cunningham traded blows with Procter throughout the weekend, while an entertaining rivalry developed between Swann and Cunningham in the contest to finish as the highest-placed English driver.
As tradition dictates, the final stage at Bushy Park became a celebration of speed and showmanship.
Zane Maloney capped a mature and impressive performance with another series of blistering stage times before delighting fans with celebratory antics alongside his uncles.
Suleman and Ahmed Esuf thrilled spectators by sliding their powerful V8-powered BMW around the circuit, while Roger Hill and Graham Gittens savoured reaching the finish after spending much of the weekend refining their car’s setup.
From fierce battles at the front to spectacular moments of drama across the field, the 2026 BCIC Rally Barbados delivered excitement at every turn. For competitors and fans alike, it was a rally that will be remembered as one of the finest editions in recent history. (SW)
