Both winning coaches have stressed the need for continuous improvement as the semifinal lineup was completed in the Barbados Football Association’s Champions Cup
Playing at the Wildey Technical Centre on Sunday, Corey Hoyte got both goals, as Brittons Hill United battled from a goal down to secure a 2-1 extra time victory over UWI Blackbirds.
Teon Codagan had given UWI a 38th minute lead, with Hoyte equalising in the 65th for Britton’s Hill, before grabbing a late winner in the 117th minute.
Brittons Hill finished fourth in the Champions Cup last season and coach Richard Forde says they aim to better that performance this year.
“You know it was a struggle with these boys but I keep explaining to them that if we don’t practice, we can’t do certain things. We are trying to get everything together and it’s something we are working really hard at,” he said.
In the nightcap game, Premier League all time leading goal scorer Armando Lashey was on target on two occasions after Mario Williams had opened the scoring, as defending champions Weymouth Wales defeated Eyre’s Meat Shop Pride of Gall Hill 3-0.
Wales coach Asquith Howell believes his team still needs to step up another gear.
“I think that tonight we were better in the attack but we still need to start scoring more goals. That is our Achilles heel. We had a lot of opportunities and you can see that we are definitely working on the attack; we just need to work on the finishing,” coach Howell observed.
Saturday’s quarterfinals at Wildey saw Paradise defeat Pro Shottas 1-0 thanks to an 87th minute goal from Sheran Hoyte, while Mavericks defeated Ivy Rovers 5-4 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw.
Deondre Brown opened the scoring for Mavericks in the 23rd minute, before Jarad Maxius drew Ivy Rovers level from the penalty spot in the 43rd.
National Under 17 goalkeeper Kaliq Lashley was the hero for Mavericks in the shootout, completing the lone save for either team.
