Neil Corbin leads BRC Driver’s Championship after mid-season shake-up

Two-time winner Neil Corbin is now the sole leader of the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Driver’s Championship following a major reshuffle of the standings after rounds four to six of the nine-round series.

The championship picture was significantly altered after the First Citizens King of the Hill event on May 24 and the BCIC RB26 rally held from May 29–31, where reliability issues and mechanical failures played a decisive role.

Corbin had entered the decisive stretch of the season tied at the top with Edward Corbin and Antigua’s Stewart Gordon. That changed dramatically after Edward Corbin suffered a blown engine, while Gordon’s challenge unraveled through a series of setbacks. Both drivers, along with several others, have now dropped out of the overall top 10.

With 101 points from a 100 per cent record of Modified 2 class wins in his Toyota GT86 CS-R3, Corbin is 13 points ahead of his closest rival Kyle Gill, who leapt from ninth to second over the last two weekends in May. Although he has won Clubman 1 every time in his Mitsubishi Colt, there have only been two starters, with reduced points awarded.

Corbin’s advantage is highlighted by a spread of only 15 points from Gill through the rest of the top 10, with close competition in prospect for the rest of the season. Third overall, up from eighth and one point behind Gill, is rising star David-Anthony Balgobin, the third leader for the season of the Modified 4 class in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX.

The only driver to hold station is fourth overall Josh Read (Ford Fiesta Rally2), top scorer so far in the FIA R5 class with 73 points. He is three ahead of SuperModified 2 leader Barry Mayers (Fiesta), the highest-placed of the five new drivers in the top 10, while Jamaica’s Kyle Gregg (Fiesta Rally2 – 69pts) has slipped from fifth to sixth.

Seventh to 10th are drivers moving into the top 10: Sean Corbin (BMW 318ti Compact – 68pts), second to Neil Corbin in M2, Rally2 runners Adam Mallalieu (Fiesta) and Stuart Maloney (Skoda Fabia RS), tied on 64, and Jermin Pope (M2 Honda Civic) with 62.
