A Jamaican man accused of raping a visitor has been remanded to Dodds Prison after the court refused him bail.
Roman Arib Patterson, 29, of no fixed address, was not required to plead to the charge that on June 12 he had sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent, knowing she did not consent or was reckless as to whether she consented to the intercourse.
Prosecutor Sergeant Gazelda Knight said the accused arrived here last July, was granted a six-month stay, had not sought an extension, and currently had no fixed address.
She told the court: “Due to the type of offence that has allegedly been committed against a visitor to this island, this has risen our concerns in respect of public safety. We do not have any prior knowledge in respect of the history of this accused. Therefore, it will be remiss of us not to object to bail.”
Patterson told the court that he had been living at a home in Gall Hill, but was evicted after missing a payment and was due to move into another apartment next week.
Admitting that he had overstayed, he also stated that he was unable to produce a surety and was remanded until July 17.
Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick told him: “I am going to remand you into custody because you have no status, you have nobody to sign your bail, and you have no fixed place of abode. You have to get yourself sorted and bring people to say where you will be if bail is going to be considered.”
The case was transferred to the Oistins Magistrates’ Court.
