Domino team De Bajan Travelers is aiming for another strong showing at the FEMUNDO World Championships, set to be held in the Dominican Republic from October 28 to November 2.
The tournament attracts around 500 athletes each year and features competition in the individual, teams of four and pairs categories.
Team president Alicia Yearwood said the squad travels annually to compete at prestigious international events.
“Our objective is to promote and encourage and teach persons the 200 style of dominoes and compete in these prestigious international tournaments, and hopefully win some big money,” she stated.
According to Harewood, Barbados will be represented by a sizeable contingent.
“We have about 55 members at present and out of the 55, I’m thinking probably only six persons might not travel, but then we have additional persons, so let’s say a contingent of probably 60 persons that we’re taking with us this year,” she explained.
Vice President Eric Lewis says the team hopes to improve upon the level of success which it attained last year, while hosting the event. He says the delegation performed admirably on that occasion despite being small in size.
“We won the individual title and then on the team’s side, we came second and I believe we also had three or four persons in the individual competition, who placed in the top 12,” Lewis said.
With the upcoming trip requiring significant financial support, Harewood said the team has begun its fundraising efforts and is also seeking further financial support.
“We have a three hand tournament coming up starting on June 29.
It plays four rounds at first, then there is an elimination process, and then we also have a cruise coming up on September 25,” she added.
