There is a proposal for Bay Primary School to be renamed in honour of late National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers, and it has the support of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
This was disclosed by Mottley yesterday while leading off tributes to Sir Garry in the House of Assembly.
“More than 300 signatures have been submitted to the Cabinet Office for the renaming of the Bay Primary School where he went to school as the Sir Garry Sobers Primary School,” Mottley said.
“I am aware that the matter is to go before the National Honours Advisory Council, but I would be surprised if there was anybody in Barbados who would find any difficulty whatsoever with the immortalising of a man from the Bayland for his name to be attached to the school that will be responsible for the rearing of the majority of children coming from that community.”
The Prime Minister also announced that a small pocket book titled 365 Not Out would be published in tribute to Sir Garry, who she called “one of the greatest Barbadians ever to have lived”.
The book, she added, would be given to every school child in Barbados. (SC)
