The Barbados Tridents are ready to bring the CPL excitement back to Kensington Oval, with eight Republic Bank CPL matches set to be played at the venue over nine action-packed days from September 5.
Tridents Chief Operating Officer John Mumby said the franchise was delighted to return home as the island prepares for a crucial stretch of the tournament.
“As a franchise, we’re delighted to be coming back to Barbados. Both our men’s and women’s teams are coming home, which we are really excited for,” Mumby said.
“We’re going to have eight games during an action-packed nine days at Kensington Oval, so we’re looking forward to the stadium being loud and proud in the weeks to come.”
Mumby made the comments during an interaction with Minister of Sport Charles Griffith at Kensington Oval on Wednesday.
Griffith said Barbados was proud to once again host CPL cricket, including the tournament final on September 20.
“As you know, cricket is in our DNA and the fact that we have the Tridents playing at home, I want to encourage all of Barbados to come out and support our team.
“I’m expecting that over the next couple of days when we are playing here, the stands will be filled and people will bring the family to the mecca, to ensure that we have, as John was saying, a loud and proud event here.”
Following Tuesday’s defeat to the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, the Tridents slipped to the bottom of the points table after suffering three consecutive losses. Mumby, however, remains confident the team can turn its fortunes around. “I think the mood in the camp is overwhelmingly positive. I know it’s been tough, and the nature of the CPL where you have a lot of tough games on the road can be tricky.
“We’re coming home with two wins on the road. We would have liked more, but it’s probably about a par start I would say. Now we’re looking for home team momentum to really carry us home,” he added.
Barbados TODAY observed steady traffic at the ticket booth at Fontabelle, with Mumby confirming that sales were at their strongest level to date.
Following the rebranding of the franchise, formerly known as the Barbados Royals, Mumby said a key focus this season is reconnecting the team with the Barbadian public.
With Barbados enjoying a strong sporting year in 2026 and producing impressive results across several disciplines, Griffith hopes the Tridents can maintain that momentum.
“I think they will build on this, and I have every reason to believe that at the end of the day we’re going to come out on top. I also want to congratulate John and his team for bringing what I deem to be a new initiative on the island, [called] Live Like a Pro.
“They’ve provided an opportunity for some of our youngsters to come and work out with the team, and I think that is a stepping stone and a pathway that I want all of the other clubs in Barbados to mimic.
“What they did with those five or six youngsters by bringing them here to Kensington to work out with the team, I think you know it is nothing short of miraculous in terms of speaking to the youngsters, how it is impacting them,” the minister said.
Mumby also revealed that the franchise will continue its outreach efforts during the upcoming games.
“The franchise is very pleased to announce that we’ll be giving 500 free tickets to every Barbados Tridents men’s game to the Ministry of Sport, for them to distribute in the community. That’s really connected to the idea of reconnecting the franchise with the people and making the franchise as accessible as we can to all Barbadians,” he added. (KH)
