Browne wins fourth term in Antigua

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has secured a fourth term in office after his Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party won a decisive victory in Thursday’s general election.

Preliminary official results show the party capturing 15 of the 17 seats in Parliament, significantly expanding its majority. The opposition United Progressive Party secured just one seat.

In a statement on social media, the Labour Party thanked voters, saying it was “humbled and honoured” by the support.

Browne, who has led the country since 2014, campaigned on economic stability and investment-led growth, pointing to recovery in the tourism sector and ongoing infrastructure development following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The election campaign was also shaped by concerns over the United States’ decision in January to suspend visa processing for Antigua and Barbuda nationals.

The move, linked to concerns about the country’s Citizenship by Investment Programme, has had implications for travel and business.

Browne’s administration has said it is working with U.S. authorities and has already implemented reforms to strengthen the programme.

The election was called ahead of schedule, with the government seeking a renewed mandate amid global economic uncertainty.

A final count is expected to confirm the results. (Reuters)
