Health minister announces expansion in nurse training, specialisations

Government has paid glowing tribute to the nation’s nurses, describing them as the “heartbeat” of the healthcare system and reaffirming a commitment to strengthen the profession for generations to come.

In a message to mark International Nurses Day  under the global theme Our Nurses. Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives, Minister of Health Senator Lisa Cummins praised nurses for their compassion, resilience, professionalism and unwavering service during some of life’s most difficult and vulnerable moments.

Her statement recognised nurses not only for their clinical expertise, but for the humanity and hope they bring to patients and families every day.

“Your service is not simply a profession; it is a calling rooted in care, sacrifice and deep compassion for others,” she said.

Below is the minister’s full statement:

Fellow Barbadians,

On International Nurses Day, we pause with immense pride and gratitude to honour the extraordinary nurses of Barbados, whose compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication continue to strengthen our healthcare system and uplift the lives of countless individuals and families across our nation.

Under this year’s global theme, Our Nurses. Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives , we celebrate not only your clinical expertise and professionalism, but also the humanity, comfort, and hope you bring to those in your care every single day. Nurses are often present during life’s most vulnerable moments, offering healing hands, reassuring words, and steadfast support when it is needed most. Your service is not simply a profession; it is a calling rooted in care, sacrifice, and deep compassion for others.

Today, we also extend heartfelt appreciation to the Ghanaian nurses who have journeyed to Barbados to lend their expertise and support during a critical time for our healthcare sector. Your willingness to serve alongside our nurses reflects the very best of international solidarity and the enduring spirit of the global nursing community. We honour you for your service and your commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of our people.

As our nation faces increasing health challenges, including non-communicable diseases, mental health concerns, re-emerging communicable diseases, and the growing demands of an ageing population, nurses remain at the centre of our national healthcare response. The Government of Barbados recognises the invaluable role you play and is committed to strengthening and supporting the nursing profession at every level.

To this end, we will continue implementing a comprehensive workforce development policy aimed at increasing the number of trained nurses, particularly in the expanding field of nurse practitioners. We firmly believe that empowering nurses through advanced education, specialist training, and leadership opportunities is essential to building a stronger, more responsive healthcare system.

This year also marks a significant milestone as we introduce new specialised areas of nursing training, including forensic mental health and developmental disorders. These initiatives represent our commitment to ensuring that healthcare in Barbados evolves to meet the diverse and changing needs of our people while creating new pathways for professional growth within nursing.

Additionally, we are actively pursuing partnerships to expand and strengthen nursing education at the Barbados Community College by bringing experienced educators from abroad to support local programmes. Through these efforts, Barbados is positioning itself not only to meet local healthcare needs but also to emerge as a regional centre of excellence for nursing education and professional training.

Importantly, these opportunities will provide many young Barbadians with access to meaningful careers and internationally recognised qualifications, opening doors for mobility and advancement throughout the region. Nurses and midwives remain at the heart of our vision for universal health coverage and equitable healthcare for all.

Empowerment must be more than a theme observed for one day. It must be reflected in our actions, our investments, and our policies. It means ensuring that nurses are respected, valued, protected, and given every opportunity to thrive personally and professionally.

The Government of Barbados stands firmly beside our nurses and remains committed to strengthening nursing as a pillar of care, dignity, resilience, and national development.

Barbados takes immense pride in its nurses, whose service exemplifies courage, professionalism, leadership, and an enduring legacy of care. On this International Nurses Day, we celebrate you, we honour you, and we reaffirm our commitment to walking this journey with you as partners in building a healthier and more compassionate future for all Barbadians.

Happy International Nurses Day.
