Port drug trial begins in High Court

A nine-member jury has begun hearing evidence in a High Court case involving more than 37 kilogrammes of cannabis found at the Bridgetown Port.

Eric Astor Omar Gibson, of West Terrace, St James, has denied that between February 5 and 7, 2019, he was in possession of 37.9 kilogrammes of cannabis and that he committed acts preparatory to trafficking the controlled drug.

In her opening statement, prosecutor Maya Kellman told the jury of eight women and one man, and two alternates in the No. 5 Supreme Court, that personnel from the Bridgetown Port discovered the cannabis in a compressor.

Attorneys Zaria Taylor and Elan Greenidge represent the accused.

Justice Pamela Beckles presides over the trial, which will continue on Wednesday.
